What's involved in the Apprenticeship?

Apprentices are employed full time (at least 30 hours per week) and will have a contract of employment that covers at least the duration of the Apprenticeship. The training takes place at a training centre or college on a day release from work each. The Apprentice will earn a salary, the minimum wage is currently 3.40 per hour, although many employers will pay more than this, consideration needs to be given to cost of travel etc.

What types of Apprenticeships are there?

There are two types of Apprenticeships:

Apprentices learn on the job; building up knowledge and skills, while gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. This allows you to receive training and assessment in the workplace while working towards nationally recognised qualifications. The NLGGTA Automotive Apprenticeship involves studyingthe new VCQ Level 2, VRQ Level 2 and Functional Skills – ICT, Maths and English. This is over an 15 month programme.

Successful completion of an Apprenticeship can then lead to progression to the NLGGTA Automotive Advanced Apprenticeship, which involves studying the new VCQ Level 3, VRQ Level 3 and Functional Skills – ICT, Maths and English. This is over a 12 month programme. This programme is ideal for learners who are keen to build a career in the motor industry and is supported with advice and guidance from the North London Garages GTA training team.
